It was near the end of World War II, and the Germans were getting desperate to turn the war back in their favor. This included a plethora of suggested scientific and engineering projects, many of them quite bizarre, in what they termed Wunderwaffen, or 'wonder weapons.'

There was an almost megalomaniacal tendency by the German leadership in their belief that science could compensate for Germany's fast-deteriorating position fighting the combined might of the Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

One idea proposed in 1942 by Hermann Göring, head of the air force and one of the most senior members of the ruling elite. Göring had made a call for light bomber designs capable of meeting what he called the "3×1000" requirement; namely that the craft be able to carry 1,000 kilograms (that is, 2,200 pounds) of bombs a distance of 1,000 kilometers (or 620 miles) with a speed of 1,000 kilometers per hour, equivalent to 620 miles per hour.

Göring had proclaimed: "I completely lack the bombers capable of round-trip flights to New York with a 4.5-tonne munition load. I would be extremely happy to possess such a bomber, which would at last stuff the mouth of arrogance across the sea."

Newly released Pentagon footage appears to show US Navy pilots in pursuit of a craft off the coast of California in 2004. The video comes to light as a highly secretive program to study military encounters with unidentified crafts is exposed. In a groundbreaking investigative report published by The New York Times on December 16, 2017, the United States Defense Department acknowledged for the first time the existence of a highly classified program it began funding in 2007 to investigate military personnel reports of unidentified flying objects. The reporting is based on highly redacted government documents and interviews with dozens of Defense Department leaders. Official video footage, such as this one encountered by U.S. Navy pilots hovering over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California, also sheds light on the existence and operations of the highly secretive Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, or AATIP. It is the first publicly acknowledged government-funded research into unidentified flying targets since Project Blue Book concluded nearly 50 years ago...

At its peak, the Anglo-French Concorde was the epitome of technological prowess and super sleek design in 20th-century aviation. It was considered the most beautiful commercial plane the world had ever seen - and, being the West's first supersonic jet, it was also the fastest of its era. However, the Concorde was not the first supersonic plane to make it to market. This honor went to a Soviet aircraft that reached supersonic speed months before the Concorde, and one that briefly became the pride of the USSR, before its ultimate failure.

The communist version of the Concorde was the Tupolev Tu-144, and it was the first passenger aircraft to fly at more than twice the speed of sound. The Tupolev's first flight occurred three months before the Concorde took to the air on March 2, 1969. But the Tu-144, which was dubbed 'Concordski' by Western observers for its similarities to its Western rival, never became quite as popular.

It was perhaps most notable as the first commercial supersonic plane to have a crash landing - which it did not once but twice.
