Inside the Soviet submarine, the crew could feel the impact of explosions shaking the walls. They waited for hours, enduring the intense pressure of U.S. depth charges, desperate to receive some kind of signal or call to action. Meanwhile, the air conditioning had malfunctioned, and the men aboard were overheated, exhausted, fevered with worry and anticipation. They knew it was their responsibility was to fire their nuclear-tipped torpedo in the event of an attack on Russia, and in the intense chaos they debated how to act. Had the crisis between John F. Kennedy, the U.S. President, and Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Premier, finally boiled over? How close had the world come to witnessing the atomic apocalypse feared by so many over the course of the crisis?

If one were to visit the remote Pacific island village of Lamakara today, one would likely encounter natives performing bizarre rituals in homemade U.S. military outfits with large American flags flying over bamboo huts. The unusual display worships American materialism and honors a mysterious and mythical messiah they call John Frum: a still unidentified American who is said to have first appeared on the island in the late 1930’s. A figure who many believe is more spirit than man, Frum is a hero to the island people of Tanna. Many claim to have seen or known him, island lore says that he still lives at the top of the smoldering volcano, which they call [quote] “John Frum’s House,” and many of the locals worship him to this day.

According to one village elder interviewed by Smithsonian Magazine, John Frum promised the island people that he would [quote] “bring planeloads and shiploads of cargo to us from America if we pray to him. Radios, TVs, trucks, boats, watches, iceboxes, medicine, Coca-Cola and many other wonderful things.” Yet, despite the assertion that the mysterious American is [quote] “even more powerful than Jesus,” there is scant evidence that John Frum is still alive today, let alone that he ever existed to begin with…

On September 22nd, 2018, Finnish retiree Leo Gastgivar was outside working in his garden on the tiny island in an archipelago between Finland and Sweden where he lived. Suddenly, his peaceful afternoon was interrupted by a most unusual presence. Gastgivar noticed two black speedboats packed with Finnish commandos in camouflage fatigues waiting in the bay short of his front door.

Awkward greetings were exchanged, as Gastgivar remained utterly at a loss as to what this somewhat sinister military presence signified for his peaceful island life. Seemingly satisfied with whatever they were observing, the commandos began to reverse their boats and continue onward. Gastgivar went inside his home, collected a pair of binoculars and watched in amazement as the commandos raced off toward another tiny island belonging to his nearest neighbor, a mysterious Russian businessman he had never met or even seen.

Mr. Gastgivar was certainly unnerved by the spectacle. He would later recall: “I thought: ‘Wow! That is certainly unusual,’” “Nobody ever visits that place...”

It was the stuff of spy legends. Using stolen "ghost" identities, the suspects had managed to blend into the US, start families who had no idea of secret lives, and establish the appearance of being normal, law-abiding citizens...

The zodiac discovery: In 2012, a dive team performed a thorough search of an ancient shipwreck off the coast of a small Greek island called Antikythera. The shipwreck had been discovered over 100 years earlier, but these divers were on the lookout for anything that had been left behind.

The team found hundreds of previously undiscovered treasures, including pottery, statues, and a sarcophagus lid. But perhaps their most intriguing discovery was found lying on the seafloor near the wreck: a rusted bronze disk, about 3 inches across. The divers brought the disk back with them, cleaned it, and performed a close examination with x-rays. They found that the surface of the disk contained the traces of what was an engraving - a drawing of a bull, the zodiac sign of Taurus.

Researchers now believe this disk will prove to be a crucial clue in unlocking the true purpose of the Antikythera Mechanism - a mysterious artifact discovered by the original dive crew. Long considered to be one of the most sophisticated and unexplained ancient items in the world, the Antikythera Mechanism may now be closer than ever to giving up its last remaining secrets.

At around 6 pm on Tuesday, September 5th, 2017, an undisclosed aircraft fell out of the evening sky and into the Nevada Desert below. The vast tract of empty land it crashed down in is known as the Nevada Test and Training Range, 5,000 square miles of dry wilderness used by the Air Force for bombing, training, and stealth exercises. The crash site was located 100 miles northwest of the Nellis Air Force Base, in the vicinity of both Groom Lake Area 51 and the Tonopah Test Range Airport, facilities notorious for housing top-secret aircraft and weapons programs.

The pilot of the downed aircraft, Lieutenant Colonel Eric Schultz, was lost in the incident, and photos and documentation of the event have been actively hidden from the public. Given the intense secrecy of many flight activities in the area, rumors have since emerged that Schultz may have been piloting a highly classified aircraft. In the absence of official details, questions loom: What kind of aircraft had Schultz been flying that day? Was it from one of the U.S.’s own black project programs? Or, even more intriguing, was there an unusual Russian connection?

Late in the evening of February 24, 1942, sirens blasted throughout Los Angeles County, warning its 3 million residents that an air raid was eminent. It was only three months after the devastating Japanese sneak-attack on Pearl Harbor that prompted the United States to enter World War II, and citizens and military officials alike feared another strike on the country’s West Coast.

When the alarm sounded, thousands of air raid wardens were dispatched, ushering people into bomb shelters and ensuring that everybody observed the mandatory blackout that would veil Los Angeles from the supposed threat of enemy aircraft overhead. During the night, 9-tons of anti-aircraft artillery shells were fired over the city at suspected enemy planes, but by dawn the firing stopped and there was scant evidence of any enemy presence or attempted attack.

The US Military dismissed the chaos as a simple false alarm, but as newspapers continued to report on the story and more witnesses described what they saw in the sky that night, it felt that the official explanation was unsatisfactory. Tensions were only heightened on February 26th when the Los Angeles Times published this photo, showing several searchlight beams converging on an unidentified object in the sky.

The event has since become known as the Battle of Los Angeles, and it remains one of the most mysterious and unexplained incidents of World War II. Were there enemy planes in the sky that night? The ocean, so dark and inhospitable to humans, is the great unexplored terrain of our planet. In its depths exists lifeforms that have yet to be discovered, and perhaps cannot even be imagined. So when, in 1997, a unidentifiable and unimaginably loud sound was detected in the remote South Pacific, people across the world started began speculating about its cause. Named after its unique sonic profile, there was something about the sound that suggested an animal origin. But could it really have been created by a leviathan of the deep? Or was it the rumble of an ice-shelf breaking apart? Maybe even an incident caused by man? Or something much stranger? An intercontinental flight. An unmarked cargo plane. An unscheduled stop. Something leaking out of the cargo hold. A body. And 67 tons of banknotes. Add to all of that the notorious CIA and you have an international plot of deception and mystery that even Hollywood couldn’t fabricate. Things came to a head on February 13th, 2016. An unmarked cargo plane en route from Munich, Germany to Durban, South Africa, made an unplanned stop in Harare, Zimbabwe. The flight in question was operated by a shady airline with the contradictory name of Western Global Airlines. After all, how can something western also be global?
The cargo on board was vaguely designated as being a “diplomatic shipment.” Its crew comprised three pilots, two of whom were American, and a mechanic. There were two additional passengers on board who were acting as couriers for the shipment to South Africa. The cargo plane’s pilot had radioed in for permission to land and brought the plane down on the tarmac of what was then called Harare International Airport. As the plane came to a stop, one of the airport’s grounds crew noticed strange reddish marks streaked on the side of the aircraft. A closer inspection only confirmed what had been suspected: they were streaks of red, splattered all along the fuselage.
It didn’t take long to locate the source of the ominous streaks. The dark red trails led to a cargo door on the underside of the plane. From the cracks in the cargo door, the assembled ground crew discovered an even ghastlier sight - a constant drip of dark red visibly leaking from the door and pooling on the tarmac beneath the plane.
